One month after the start of the Olympic Games in Beijing, the main sportswear brands have held a meeting with unions and non-governmental organizations comprising Play Fair 2008, to study how to promote freedom of association and collective bargaining and improved wages throughout the sector, among other issues. In this working group brands include Nike, Adidas, New Balance, Umbro and Speedo.
Since last June 30 to July 2 , the various players in the group discussions have focused on determining how to prioritize and encourage union organization, collective bargaining and social dialogue. It seeks a better understanding on the mechanisms of production, costs and productivity as well as information necessary for effective collective bargaining. Also address other issues such as training of managers and workers, temporary employment and the need to establish procedures that guarantee the rights of workers in the closure of a factory - a system of compensation, etc..
sporting goods industry is responding to repeated requests from the Play Fair 2008 - sponsored by the Clean Clothes Campaign, the International Trade Union Confederation and the International Federation of Workers in Textile and Leather industry - to ensure that labor rights and decent wages in factories supplying major brands. Play Fair 2008 released in April of this year's report "Clearing the Hurdles " which were identified the four fundamental problems that must address the sector, such as low wages, abuse of short-term contracts and other forms of precarious employment, violations of freedom of association, and the closure of factories due to restructuring industry. This report formed the basis for the three-day meeting was held in Hong Kong.
