FAIR PLAY Last call for 2008 to IOC on the eve of the opening of the Olympic Games in Beijing

This Sunday 3rd August in Hong Kong, the international campaign PLAY FAIR 2008 will host its last street action before the opening of the Beijing Olympics. This action aims ask the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to take concrete measures to improve the employment situation in the factories where they are made of licensed Olympic sports.

While Fair Play is committed to the sports industry and some National Olympic Committees, the IOC continues to refuse to address the issue of labor rights violations in the supply chains of articles for the Olympics. The most we have done is say they will consider the working conditions for the selection of the city acojerá Olympics 2016. On the one hand, it is unclear what will demand by 2016 and on the other hand, this is a very distant date which is another 8 years of inaction and no improvement for the workers.

The action of August 3 includes a press conference for journalists interested, a "corner speaker" and an opportunity to take photographs that illustrate the actions.

The press release on the event will be available on this page on 3 August. FAIR PLAY campaign 2008 / Play Fair 2008 is not closed to this event and will from now on alert to the commitments to be taken by the IOC.

Major sports brands and trade unions constitute a working group to improve working conditions in the textile industry

One month after the start of the Olympic Games in Beijing, the main sportswear brands have held a meeting with unions and non-governmental organizations comprising Play Fair 2008, to study how to promote freedom of association and collective bargaining and improved wages throughout the sector, among other issues. In this working group brands include Nike, Adidas, New Balance, Umbro and Speedo.

Since last June 30 to July 2 , the various players in the group discussions have focused on determining how to prioritize and encourage union organization, collective bargaining and social dialogue. It seeks a better understanding on the mechanisms of production, costs and productivity as well as information necessary for effective collective bargaining. Also address other issues such as training of managers and workers, temporary employment and the need to establish procedures that guarantee the rights of workers in the closure of a factory - a system of compensation, etc..

sporting goods industry is responding to repeated requests from the Play Fair 2008 - sponsored by the Clean Clothes Campaign, the International Trade Union Confederation and the International Federation of Workers in Textile and Leather industry - to ensure that labor rights and decent wages in factories supplying major brands. Play Fair 2008 released in April of this year's report "Clearing the Hurdles " which were identified the four fundamental problems that must address the sector, such as low wages, abuse of short-term contracts and other forms of precarious employment, violations of freedom of association, and the closure of factories due to restructuring industry. This report formed the basis for the three-day meeting was held in Hong Kong.

Next find the manifesto read on the Net Bike Ride held in Barcelona on June 28th pass with the help of Friends of the Bike .

been 15 years since the first international mobilization for the rights of women workers and workers in the textile industry sports and 4 years from the Play Fair at the Olympics in Athens.

Major brands in this industry have advertised with great self-satisfaction the adoption of codes of conduct and social responsibility measures, which they say guarantee that in the production of clothes and shoes there is no exploitation work.

However, the work of NGOs and trade unions in North and South show a very different reality:
  • Research by Play Fair at the end of 2007 shows how, Although codes of conduct, workers and workers who make the products Nike, Adidas, Reebok, Asics and New Balance, among others, are the consequences of the enormous pressure to meet deadlines getting shorter priced ever lower, in the form of working hard with no overtime pay is recorded or
  • factories working for the big sportswear companies always find the mechanisms for paying wages below the minimum established by the laws of the countries where production occurs by setting impossible goals. And this despite the fact that working hours are higher at 12 hours.
  • soccer balls produced in the province of Jalandhar (India) are mostly sewn by people working at home charging between 25 and 65 cents euro per ball (the same ball that comes to sell at 120 euros).

  • The workers who stitch balls in Pakistan are between 30 and 45 cents per ball.

  • Workers and Cambodja workers receive an average wage of 65 euros per month.

  • in Bangladesh do not get to pay the minimum wage of 20 euros a month.

These realities are possible:
- For the great insecurity of labor markets due to pressure from multinational corporations

- The union of business strategy that prevents workers to organize to defend their interests,

- The instability of trade relations imposed by large international firms.

Today in Hong Kong a meeting between representatives of the Play Fair 2008 campaign and representatives of the firms major sportswear. At this meeting, the Play Fair 2008 campaign and all entities and organizations give support requiring businesses:

1 - To take concrete steps to develop an environment that is conducive to freedom of association and col Ectiva,

2 - To ensure the elimination of poor to the supply chain,

3 - to be over with the policy of closures and relocation of factories,

4 - To take measures effective in improving the incomes of workers and employees to achieve a living wage.
